A friendly international between Denmark and Ukraine was abandoned after Christian Eriksen collapsed during the closing stages of the match on Sunday.
The former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder fell to the ground during the end-of-season fixture in Odense, prompting immediate concern from players, officials, and medical staff. Both nations had arranged the friendly despite missing out on qualification for the upcoming World Cup.
Medical personnel rushed onto the pitch within moments of the incident. As treatment was administered, players from both teams formed a protective circle around Eriksen to provide privacy while the situation unfolded. The referee later decided to end the contest before full time.
Although the initial scenes were alarming, Eriksen was conscious when he left the field and was able to make his way to an ambulance with assistance.
Positive Update From Danish Football Authorities
Following the incident, Denmark’s football federation provided reassuring news regarding the midfielder’s condition.
The federation stated that Eriksen was awake and responding well given the circumstances. National team doctor Morten Boesen also confirmed that the player recovered consciousness quickly after a brief period of unconsciousness.
According to Boesen, Eriksen regained awareness shortly after the collapse and was able to leave the playing area under his own power before being transported for further medical assessment.
The encouraging update brought relief to teammates, coaching staff, and supporters who witnessed the unsettling moment.
Medical Device Functioned as Intended
Sunday’s incident inevitably revived memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in 2021.
On that occasion, the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest on the field and required emergency resuscitation. Boesen was among the medical professionals involved in the life-saving response that day.
After recovering from that episode, Eriksen underwent a procedure to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted in his chest. The device is designed to monitor heart rhythms and deliver corrective treatment when necessary following dangerous cardiac events.
The ICD enabled Eriksen to continue both his club and international career after his remarkable recovery.
Providing an update after Sunday’s events, Boesen explained that the implanted device reacted appropriately.
“The pacemaker responded as it should,” he said.
He added that Eriksen would undergo additional examinations at the hospital to determine the exact cause of the latest incident. Boesen also revealed that the player remained in good spirits and had asked for a message to be passed on to his teammates, assuring them that he was okay.
Højbjerg Praises Rapid Response
Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg spoke afterward and highlighted the swift actions taken by everyone involved.
The midfielder recalled seeing Eriksen fall and immediately recognizing that something was wrong. He praised the professionalism and composure shown by those who rushed to assist his teammate.
Højbjerg said the reaction from players, medical staff, and officials was immediate and respectful, adding that the courage displayed by those caring for Eriksen on the pitch deserved recognition.
For the Danish captain, the most important outcome was the positive news regarding Eriksen’s condition.
Eriksen Previously Recalled 2021 Ordeal
In an interview with the BBC after his recovery from the 2021 cardiac arrest, Eriksen reflected on the frightening experience and described the limited memories he retained from the incident.
He explained that he remembered the moments leading up to the collapse, including a throw-in and the ball striking his knee, before everything suddenly went blank.
The next thing he recalled was opening his eyes to find people gathered around him while medical staff worked to help him breathe. Confused about what had happened, he initially wondered whether he had suffered injuries to his back or legs and attempted small movements to assess his condition.
It was only later, while being transported in an ambulance, that Eriksen learned how serious the situation had been. Hearing someone ask how long he had been unconscious, he was told the answer was five minutes.
That conversation marked the first moment he fully understood the extent of the medical emergency he had survived.
Sunday’s incident once again caused concern throughout the football community, but early reports from Denmark’s medical team indicated that Eriksen was conscious, communicating, and receiving further evaluation as doctors continued their investigations.
