Real Madrid have reached an agreement with RB Leipzig to sign Yan Diomande in a package worth as much as €135 million, setting a new transfer record for the Spanish club. At the same time, Madrid have strengthened their attempt to retain Vinícius Júnior by presenting the Brazilian attacker with an improved contract proposal as Arsenal continue to monitor his situation.

Madrid Finalise Landmark Agreement With Leipzig

The negotiations for Diomande were concluded on Wednesday afternoon following several weeks of discussions between the two clubs. Paris Saint-Germain had previously been involved in the pursuit of the teenager but later withdrew, clearing the way for Madrid to move closer to completing the transfer.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Spanish side are expected to provide Leipzig with €125 million upfront. A further €10 million could be triggered through performance-related clauses, taking the overall value of the move to €135 million, or approximately £115.7 million.

That figure would make Diomande the costliest signing in Real Madrid’s history. The previous benchmark was established when Jude Bellingham arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2023, with that transaction understood to have carried a potential total value of €134 million once bonuses were included.

Diomande only became a Leipzig player last summer, joining the Bundesliga club from Leganés for €20 million, equivalent to about £17.4 million. His former side will also benefit financially from the latest transfer because they are entitled to receive five per cent of any future sale.

Before leaving Spain for Germany, the young forward had featured just 10 times for Leganés’ senior team. His reputation has risen rapidly since then, helped by his performances for Leipzig and an impressive World Cup campaign with Côte d’Ivoire.

The 19-year-old was photographed arriving in Austria on Wednesday as Leipzig began their pre-season training camp. However, his move to Madrid is now expected to proceed, with a contract running through 2031 reportedly waiting for him in the Spanish capital.

Once the transfer is formally completed, Diomande will also become the most expensive African footballer ever. The existing record belongs to Nicolas Pépé, whose move to Arsenal in 2019 cost the London club £72 million.

Vinícius Considering Enhanced Madrid Proposal

Madrid do not view Diomande’s expected arrival as a factor in the future of Vinícius. The Brazilian’s contract situation is being handled separately, with the club determined to prevent one of its leading forwards from leaving.

Vinícius and representatives from Roc Nation met Madrid officials on Wednesday to discuss a possible extension. Arsenal remain attentive to developments and would be prepared to make their move should the player decide against continuing in Spain.

The Premier League club are believed to be willing to offer more than £100 million for the 26-year-old. Vinícius has fewer than 12 months left on his current agreement, leaving Madrid under pressure to secure a renewal rather than risk further uncertainty over his future.

Reports had suggested that the forward turned down the club’s most recent proposal. However, he is now understood to be assessing revised terms that move closer to his request for an annual salary of €30 million.

Sources in Spain have characterised the latest discussions as constructive, increasing confidence within Madrid that an agreement can eventually be reached.

Vinícius also spoke on Tuesday about his relationship with José Mourinho, Real Madrid’s new head coach. After returning for pre-season duties following the World Cup, the Brazilian said Mourinho wanted to see him enjoying himself, maintaining a positive attitude and expressing his football naturally on the pitch.

Arsenal Keep Alternative Attacking Targets in View

Arsenal are continuing to prepare for different outcomes while waiting for Vinícius to make his decision. Mikel Arteta’s team have already agreed a £75 million transfer for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães, who plays alongside Vinícius for Brazil.

Should the Real Madrid forward accept the new offer and remain at the Bernabéu, Arsenal are expected to redirect their attention toward other attacking options.

One potential target is Julián Alvarez. Barcelona sporting director Deco met Atlético Madrid officials on Wednesday to discuss a possible transfer for the Argentina international, but Arsenal have not abandoned hope of convincing the 26-year-old to move to north London.

The Gunners’ search for attacking reinforcements follows their failure to sign Morgan Rogers last month. The England forward instead completed a move to Chelsea for £117 million, establishing a new British transfer record.

Arsenal have additionally been connected with Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. The France international is also attracting interest from Liverpool, while PSG, the reigning European champions, are said to value him at approximately £145 million.
