Manchester City have completed a £125m move for Enzo Fernández from Chelsea, matching the British transfer record in a dramatic deadline-day deal. Chelsea, meanwhile, were left furious after Monaco pulled the plug on their planned move for Lamine Camara, leaving the London club without the midfield replacement they had expected to secure.

The deal capped a frantic day for City, who also strengthened their attacking options by bringing in Iliman Ndiaye from Everton in a package that could reach £65m. Fernández has agreed to a five-year contract with Pep Guardiola’s side, giving City another major addition as they reshape their midfield.

Chelsea had been determined to command a substantial fee for the Argentina international, but as negotiations with City progressed, the Blues believed they were close to securing a replacement.

Monaco Agreement Falls Apart

Chelsea had reached an agreement worth £47m with Monaco for Camara. The Senegal international was expected to sign a six-year contract, with the possibility of extending his stay by another season.

The move came back into focus after Everton encountered problems in their efforts to sign United States striker Folarin Balogun. Monaco had been looking to generate additional funds and Chelsea saw an opportunity to revive their interest in the 22-year-old midfielder.

Earlier in the day, Monaco had rejected a £38.1m proposal from Chelsea for Camara. The Premier League club subsequently returned with an improved offer and secured what they believed was a written agreement with the Ligue 1 side.

However, the situation changed dramatically as the deadline approached. Monaco withdrew from the arrangement, leaving Chelsea shocked and angry. Sources close to the situation described the French club’s handling of the matter as “deeply unprofessional”.

The drama surrounding Camara was made even more unusual by developments involving Everton. Despite their earlier difficulties, the Merseyside club continued pursuing Balogun and renegotiated the terms of the transfer involving the former Arsenal forward. That agreement eventually collapsed shortly after midnight, adding another twist to an already chaotic night.

City’s Midfield Rebuild Continues

Despite losing their intended replacement, Chelsea did not back out of the Fernández sale.

For City, the Argentina midfielder becomes another major piece of an expensive midfield rebuild. Their spending in that area has now reached £327m this summer, with Elliot Anderson arriving from Nottingham Forest for £116m and Ayyoub Bouaddi moving from Lille for £86m.

Fernández expressed his excitement after completing the transfer and made clear that he expects to contribute to City’s continued pursuit of silverware.

“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success,” Fernández said.

The 25-year-old also highlighted his commitment to improving and maintaining his demanding training standards.

“I pride myself on continually improving my game.”

Fernández added that everyone who has worked with him understands the level of effort he puts into training and matches, promising to bring the same mentality to Manchester.

The £125m fee puts Fernández level with Alexander Isak as the most expensive player ever signed by an English club. Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle for the same amount one year earlier.

Maresca Reunion Finally Happens

Fernández already knows Enzo Maresca well from their time together at Chelsea, making the midfielder’s move to City particularly notable. Maresca had previously coached him at Stamford Bridge, and a reunion had been discussed for some time.

City began negotiations with Chelsea on Monday evening and ultimately secured a player they see as an important part of their reshaped midfield.

The champions have been forced to make significant changes in the middle of the pitch after Rodri moved to Barcelona and Bernardo Silva joined Real Madrid. Nico González has also departed, completing a move to Newcastle.

City were still prepared to pursue Fernández despite Chelsea’s unofficial £120m deadline for potential suitors passing last month. Their willingness to continue negotiations eventually paid off with a record-equalling agreement.

Fernández’s Chelsea Exit Comes After Months of Tension

The midfielder had been looking for an exit from Chelsea since March, and his departure was eventually confirmed through a brief announcement on the club’s website.

Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for £106.7m and scored 31 goals during his spell in west London. His initial preference had been a move to Real Madrid, but his situation at Chelsea deteriorated after Maresca’s acrimonious departure from the club earlier this year.

Fernández, who had taken on the unofficial role of vice-captain, became increasingly outspoken following Chelsea’s Champions League elimination against Paris Saint-Germain in March. The club responded by handing him a two-match suspension.

His relationship with the supporters also became strained. After returning to training following the World Cup, Fernández was booed by sections of the Chelsea crowd during a pre-season meeting with Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge.

He was involved in Chelsea’s opening league match of the campaign, coming off the bench as Xabi Alonso’s team defeated Fulham. However, he did not feature in either of the club’s following two games.

Chelsea End Window With Major Sales

Chelsea eventually concluded that allowing Fernández to leave could benefit the club. There was growing sentiment internally that his performances and conduct had not demonstrated the qualities expected of someone occupying a vice-captaincy position.

During his time at Chelsea, Fernández did collect major honours, including the Conference League and Club World Cup, but the club ultimately decided that moving him on was the preferred solution.

Chelsea have generated roughly £500m through player sales and loan arrangements during the summer transfer window. Their final business included the permanent sale of Marc Guiu to RB Leipzig for £16m.

The club also sent Dário Essugo to Strasbourg on loan, while Robert Sánchez joined Como temporarily and Mykhailo Mudryk moved to Tottenham on another loan agreement. Tosin Adarabioyo completed a permanent transfer to Spurs as Chelsea brought a turbulent window to a close.
