Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal still have significant room to improve despite watching the Premier League champions produce one of their most impressive displays of the new campaign in Sunday’s comeback victory over Chelsea.

Arsenal were forced to respond to an unfamiliar situation at the Emirates Stadium after falling behind for the first time this season. Morgan Rogers supplied the early setback, putting Arteta’s team under pressure and testing the resilience that has become central to their recent success.

Rather than allowing the goal to disrupt their rhythm, Arsenal increased their intensity and gradually took control. Kai Havertz restored parity before playing an important role in the decisive moment, cleverly allowing the ball to run through with a dummy that opened the opportunity for Martin Ødegaard.

The Arsenal captain took advantage, completing the turnaround and securing a 2-1 victory that lifted the champions alongside Manchester City on points at the Premier League summit.

Arteta Sees More Potential in His Champions

For Arteta, the significance of the result extended beyond three points. The Arsenal manager was particularly encouraged by the way his players handled the difficult opening period and then imposed themselves on the contest.

He described the overall performance as outstanding and said he had taken great satisfaction from watching his side from the opening whistle through to the finish, even though the early stages provided a serious challenge.

What pleased him most was Arsenal’s reaction after going behind. Arteta highlighted the mentality, technical level and determination his players showed when the game began moving against them.

The Spaniard also believes the display offered evidence that this Arsenal team may be capable of operating at a higher standard than the one reached during the previous campaign.

However, Arteta made clear that further progress will depend on maintaining the same hunger while avoiding complacency. He wants both himself and his players to continue searching for improvements on a daily basis, with humility remaining an important part of that process.

Despite Arsenal’s status as champions, the manager does not consider the team a finished product. In his view, there are still several areas in which the squad can develop, and he believes the players have considerably more to offer as the season progresses.

That ambition, Arteta suggested, remains one of the defining characteristics of his group.

Perfect Starts Highlight Demands of Title Race

Arsenal’s victory maintained their flawless beginning to the league campaign. Manchester City are the only other club to have matched their record of three wins from the opening three fixtures.

Rather than seeing that early run as evidence that the season could become straightforward, Arteta believes it demonstrates how demanding the title race is likely to be.

The Arsenal manager expects matches to be decided by narrow margins and has already seen how difficult it can be to collect points even when his team are performing well.

He pointed to Arsenal’s recent trip to Villa Park as one example of the level of resistance they are encountering. The meeting with Chelsea presented another demanding examination, and Arteta expects a future visit to Sunderland to provide a similarly difficult challenge.

From his perspective, there is little prospect of comfortable weekends in the Premier League. Arsenal are preparing with the expectation that virtually every opponent will make them work intensely for their results.

The demanding nature of the competition is not something Arteta is looking to avoid. Instead, he believes dealing with those challenges is precisely what his squad must be ready for throughout the campaign.

Ødegaard Rediscovers His Influence

Another major source of encouragement for Arsenal was Ødegaard’s display in midfield.

The Norway international produced an influential performance and scored the goal that ultimately separated the sides. More importantly for Arteta, Arsenal’s captain appears to have rediscovered his physical condition and confidence after two seasons complicated by injury problems.

Ødegaard has opened the campaign in productive fashion, registering three goals across his first four appearances.

Arteta believes the midfielder is playing with a level of self-belief that ranks among the highest he has seen from him.

The manager feels Ødegaard has additional motivation following a previous campaign in which injuries prevented him from playing as regularly as he would have wanted.

That desire was visible against Chelsea. Rather than limiting himself to controlling possession and supplying passes, Ødegaard repeatedly moved into advanced positions, attempted shots and looked to create opportunities for those around him.

His willingness to attack space and influence the final third gave Arsenal another dimension.

Arteta also noted the importance of rebuilding relationships between key players who have not always been available at the same time. Ødegaard and Havertz, for example, have spent relatively little time together on the pitch during the past three years because of different interruptions.

With both now looking sharp, Arsenal are beginning to see what that partnership may be capable of providing.

Havertz Impresses Against Former Club

Havertz was another player to receive significant praise from Arteta after an effective performance against his former team.

The Germany international scored Arsenal’s equaliser and then contributed intelligently to the winning move by leaving the ball for Ødegaard rather than attempting to take possession himself.

Beyond those decisive moments, Arteta has been encouraged by Havertz’s general condition.

The Arsenal manager believes the forward looks increasingly comfortable with his surroundings and appears happy both on and away from the pitch. Arteta also referred to positive developments in Havertz’s personal life as part of the sense that the player is in a good place.

Most importantly from Arsenal’s perspective, Havertz looks physically strong and is finding the net.

His form adds another attacking option for a side determined to build upon last season rather than simply repeat it.

There was, however, one fitness concern for Arteta following the game. Cristhian Mosquera is dealing with a muscular issue, although the Arsenal manager is hopeful the defender will not face an extended spell on the sidelines.

Chelsea Left to Address Defensive Problems

The mood was understandably different in the Chelsea camp.

There were moments when the visitors carried a genuine attacking threat, but their defensive vulnerability again proved costly. The defeat was the first suffered by Xabi Alonso since taking charge of his new side.

Chelsea have now allowed seven goals across their opening three league fixtures, a record that Alonso knows must improve if his team are to convert promising performances into victories.

The Chelsea manager stressed that winning remains his main objective and acknowledged that achieving that becomes considerably easier when a team is not regularly conceding.

He wants his side to become more compact, better balanced and more ruthless in decisive situations, although he also cautioned that those improvements will require time.

Alonso did not believe Chelsea had been comprehensively outplayed at the Emirates.

The visitors travelled with the intention of competing for the victory and, in his assessment, remained close enough to Arsenal for the outcome to have gone differently.

Chelsea had opportunities that might have altered the momentum, including the possibility of scoring another goal when the contest remained within reach.

Nevertheless, Alonso accepted the final score without attempting to dismiss its significance. The defeat was painful, he admitted, but he views it as only the first setback of what is expected to be a long process with his new team.

As a result, he does not expect one loss to dramatically affect the mood inside the squad.

Alonso Refuses to Abandon Proactive Approach

Chelsea’s defensive record has nevertheless become increasingly difficult to ignore.

The London club have failed to register a clean sheet in their most recent 19 Premier League matches, but Alonso has no intention of responding by instructing his players to defend deeply for entire games.

His preferred approach remains based on competing proactively.

Against Arsenal, Chelsea did not arrive planning to retreat towards their own penalty area immediately, absorb pressure and attempt to extend the contest for as long as possible.

Instead, Alonso wanted his players to engage Arsenal, press at different heights and take responsibility when they had possession.

At certain moments Chelsea attempted to push further up the pitch, while at others they operated in a more conservative position depending on the situation of the game.

Alonso believes there were numerous elements of the performance that showed progress. His conclusion, though, was that those promising aspects now need to be executed more consistently and effectively.

Finding the right balance between ambition in possession and greater defensive security will be one of the central challenges facing the new Chelsea manager.

Caicedo Fitness Remains Under Review

Chelsea were also without Moisés Caicedo at the Emirates because of injury.

The midfielder has still not started a match this season, but Alonso sounded hopeful that the problem will not develop into a lengthy absence.

There is uncertainty, however, over whether Caicedo will be ready when Chelsea face Leeds in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Alonso indicated that the decision will depend heavily on the medical assessment and the level of risk involved in bringing the midfielder back into action.

Chelsea appear determined to take a more cautious approach after what their manager believes may have been an overly aggressive attempt to reintroduce Caicedo during the previous week.

Alonso does not want to repeat that decision if there is a possibility of aggravating the problem.

For Chelsea, the immediate focus therefore turns towards improving their defensive structure while carefully managing the fitness of an important midfielder.

Arsenal, meanwhile, leave the weekend with a very different message.

Three victories from three have kept the champions alongside Manchester City at the top, while the manner of their recovery against Chelsea reinforced Arteta’s belief that the team’s ceiling has not yet been reached.

For a side already defending the Premier League crown, the manager’s insistence that there is another level to find underlines the standard Arsenal are setting for themselves this season.
