Florian Wirtz on Why Liverpool Fans Should Stay Optimistic

It’s me, Florian. After Wednesday, I am thinking Liverpool will be fine. Even when it feels tough, like 1-1 with Sunderland did. Our dressing room? Full of strong people and talent. That will help us get better soon, I just know it.

A draw is not what we wanted. It sort of feels like a step backwards, honestly. Sunderland scored first, which surprised everyone. Their goal took a big deflection off Chemsdine Talbi’s strike. That put us in a real tricky spot. But later, I got the ball and ran forward. My shot hit Nordi Mukiele and went in. That was in the 81st minute. It gave us a point.

I told the website after, “I’m disappointed we didn’t win.” Going 1-0 down means a point is better than nothing, obviously. But winning was the only goal for us. We set high standards for ourself. The crowd at Anfield expected a big performance. Sunderland were very tough to break down, they defended so hard. We tried for a winner late, but it didn’t come.

What I believe is our team’s mindset is strong. We got to stay positive, just keep working in training. That’s the main thing. To the fans, I say don’t worry too much. There is so much quality here, and the character of the group is incredible. We need to push each other, and soon things will click, I’m sure. We talk about being more consistent. Cutting out little mistakes. There’s room for improving, even with all this talent we have.

This start to the season has been up and down, for sure. Some brilliant moments, but not steady yet. That worries some supporters, I get it. But I feel optimistic anyway. Arne Slot came in the summer, and his ideas are good. But new systems need time, you know? The players are still adapting. We’re moving the right direction, I think.

Anfield was so loud on Wednesday. Then their goal made it quiet for a bit. My equalizer brought the noise back, which was amazing. Not winning left a disappointed feeling, though. The fans were still great behind us, which matters a lot.

Our next game is away. It’s a big challenge. A win would give everyone a boost, I think. We’re determined to learn and to show a better performance. We have to prove we can bounce back.

The lads is all talking about how we adapt to what the manager wants. It’s details, you know? Small things in positioning and when to press. Sometimes it feels a bit unnatural still, but then you see flashes in training where it just works perfect. That’s what we’re holding onto.

Personally, I feels the mood is still good around the place. You can’t get too low after one frustrating night. We has another match coming quick, which is probably the best thing for a group like ours. Just get back out there and try to put things right together.

Looking at the bigger picture, nobody in this league is having a perfect start. Every team is dropping points they didn’t expect. For us, it’s about making sure our reaction is strong. I believes we will show that. We have to.
