Gary Neville Expresses Lack of Surprise Over Amorim Sacking, Cites “Poor Reflection” on Manchester United

I saw the news about Ruben Amorim this morning and honestly? It weren’t a big surprise to me. The man got sacked by Manchester United. Just the speed of it all really caught me off guard.

It makes the whole club look bad, this quick firing. Shows the decision-making is still all wrong.

Everything blew up after that last press conference, which was very agitated. He’d drawn with Leeds and it was disappointing. A thing he always insisted on was being called the “manager,” not just “a coach.” Which was different from his actual job title the club gave him.

I was talking on TV right after we heard. Changing a manager so fast in the middle of a season, it means nothing is working. It means all the choices before didn’t succeed. Trying to find a good replacement now is going to be very challenging, I think.

The timing this morning was a shock, I’ll admit that. But I am not surprised he is gone. I didn’t realize it would happen so quickly though. I thought maybe they’d wait a couple more weeks. Things inside must have gotten so challenging they just decided to do it very quickly.

The recent performances was the real reason, for me. There has to be a level of honesty when the team plays disappointing. Like the game against Wolves seemed to be the killer one, it was a bad one. Some of the football last month has been shocking.

He had the lowest win percentage of any boss here since Ferguson left, which is over 12 years. He really wanted to play with a 3-4-2-1 shape. That was a big part of why it didn’t work out.

I thought United would adapt a lot better to playing a back three than they did. I’m really stunned that the whole time he was at the club they’ve continued to play so poorly in that system. The wing-back roles and the spots behind the striker are specialist and challenging.

But that’s a failing upon the manager, the players and the club, in terms of not recruiting properly for it. It’s like with Van Gaal or Mourinho or Moyes or ten Hag. Amorim played a very different style of football than United would ordinarily expect.

All these experiments with different styles just have got to stop. Bobby Charlton always talked about what this club is. Adventurous, exciting football, playing young players, entertaining the crowd. United must take risks and be courageous in playing attacking football. That’s the DNA.

They have got to appoint a manager that fits that DNA. Clubs like Ajax or Barcelona, they never change for anybody. I don’t believe United should change for anybody. The club has to find a manager now who’s got experience, who’s willing to play fast, entertaining, attacking, aggressive football.

His time here was short and inconsistent. It didn’t start the resurgence we hoped for. Now the club is looking for its fifth permanent manager since Ferguson. They’re facing all the same old questions about who they are and what they do next, right in the middle of the season.
