Carrick’s United Edge Forest Amid VAR Controversy

Manchester United moved a step closer to sealing third place in the Premier League after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, with Michael Carrick continuing his impressive run in interim charge.

The result added another chapter to United’s unexpected revival under Carrick, who has now overseen 11 wins from 16 matches since taking over. A return to the Champions League is now firmly within reach, something that looked highly unlikely only a few months ago during the chaos of Ruben Amorim’s troubled spell in charge.

While Bruno Fernandes once again delivered a decisive contribution, the match became overshadowed by a contentious refereeing call involving Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

Fernandes Matches Historic Assist Record

Fernandes continued his outstanding season by registering his 20th Premier League assist, moving level with legendary creators Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry in the competition’s history books.

The Portuguese midfielder had been linked with a possible departure last year amid uncertainty surrounding his future, but he now finds himself central to United’s resurgence.

His creativity proved vital once more as United found a way past a stubborn Forest side in a game packed with tension, controversy and late drama.

Shaw Ends Long Wait Before Forest Respond

United took the lead through Luke Shaw, whose strike marked his first goal for the club in more than three years. Old Trafford celebrated the rare moment from the defender, but the advantage did not last long.

Forest answered through Morato, whose header restored parity and shifted momentum briefly toward the visitors.

The game then exploded into controversy almost immediately after the restart.

Within moments of Forest’s equaliser, the ball was back in the net through Cunha. However, replays clearly showed Mbeumo appearing to control possession with his upper arm and chest in the build-up.

Many inside the stadium expected the goal to be ruled out without debate. Instead, referee Michael Salisbury allowed the strike to stand following a lengthy VAR review, insisting the handball had been accidental.

The decision left Forest furious and confused supporters from both sides struggling to understand the interpretation.

Pereira Questions Handball Decision

Forest manager Vitor Pereira did not hide his frustration after full time, insisting the officials had made the wrong call.

According to Pereira, the handball looked obvious and he suggested managers needed greater clarity regarding how such incidents are judged.

The Forest boss also stressed that coaches across the league continue to struggle with consistency in officiating decisions.

Carrick Praises Progress but Warns More Is Needed

Carrick largely avoided focusing on the controversy afterward, instead highlighting the progress United have made since his arrival.

The former United midfielder praised his players for climbing back into the Premier League’s top positions, though he admitted the challenge of competing consistently at the highest level remains significant.

He acknowledged that major improvements and further investment would still be required if United are to compete domestically and in Europe next season.

Emotional Farewell for Casemiro

The afternoon also carried emotional significance for Casemiro, who appears set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.

Supporters unveiled a banner before kick-off reading “Até a morte,” a tribute to the Brazilian’s fighting spirit during difficult and successful periods alike.

Every tackle from the midfielder was loudly applauded, while fans urged him to shoot whenever he found space near the penalty area.

When Carrick substituted him in the 80th minute, Casemiro left the pitch to a standing ovation, visibly emotional as he acknowledged the crowd.

Despite his popularity, the Brazilian’s spell in Manchester will likely conclude with only an FA Cup and League Cup triumph, reflecting a disappointing era overall for the club.

Anderson Impresses Despite Forest Defeat

Although Forest ultimately left empty-handed, Elliot Anderson produced an outstanding midfield display.

The energetic midfielder constantly pressed Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo while driving Forest forward throughout the contest. His influence was evident in both visiting goals, underlining why he has become such an important figure for Pereira’s side.

Forest continued pushing even after United regained control.

Mbeumo eventually converted his fourth clear opportunity of the match following another incisive Fernandes pass, a goal that initially appeared to settle the encounter.

But Forest responded again when Anderson supplied Morgan Gibbs-White, who finished instinctively despite wearing a protective mask because of a facial injury.

That late strike ensured a nervy ending for the home supporters.

United Rebuild Momentum at Old Trafford

Only a year ago, United closed their home campaign with a victory over Aston Villa that secured a disappointing 15th-place finish after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham.

At the time, the club appeared directionless and burdened by growing frustration around Old Trafford.

Carrick’s arrival has transformed the atmosphere significantly. Optimism has returned, European football is back on the horizon, and the disconnect between team and supporters has begun to fade.

Still, the rebuilding job remains incomplete.
