Cardiff City produced a dramatic late escape at the Cardiff City Stadium as Rubin Colwill’s superb free-kick secured a 1-1 draw against Wrexham in the Championship.
With the Welsh derby deep into the eighth minute of stoppage time, Wrexham looked set to leave the capital with the victory. Instead, George Dobson’s foul on Joel Colwill just outside the penalty area gave Cardiff one final opportunity.
Rubin Colwill took responsibility and made it count. The Cardiff substitute curled a fierce free-kick over the defensive wall and beyond Wrexham goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, sparking celebrations and denying Wrexham the chance to claim bragging rights.
The equaliser wiped out Kieffer Moore’s early opener. The former Cardiff striker needed only three minutes to find the net and once again punished his old club, taking his personal tally against the Bluebirds to seven goals.
Despite conceding so late, Wrexham could reasonably feel frustrated not to have finished the contest earlier. They registered 18 attempts compared with Cardiff’s 11 and created enough opportunities to put the result beyond doubt before the hosts’ dramatic recovery.
Moore Punishes Cardiff’s Defensive Shuffle
Cardiff entered the derby with their defensive options severely reduced. Injuries to Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish forced manager to alter his usual setup, with left-back Joel Bagan moving into central defence alongside Gabriel Osho.
That unfamiliar pairing was immediately tested.
After Cardiff failed to properly deal with Lewis O’Brien’s free-kick, the ball reached Danny Imray, whose delivery forward caught the home defence out of position. Osho’s positioning kept Moore onside, allowing the striker to burst beyond Bagan before firing a powerful finish over Nathan Trott.
The goal ended Moore’s 11-match scoring drought for Wrexham and represented his first goal since February.
Cardiff were again threatened moments later when Callum Doyle rose to meet another opportunity, only for Trott to react quickly and tip his header over the bar. The opening stages suggested the Bluebirds were struggling to adjust to the intensity of Championship football.
However, Cardiff gradually settled.
Their best spell of the opening period came after Zak Vyner’s under-hit back pass nearly created an opening. Patterson reacted decisively, getting to the loose ball ahead of Yousef Salech before the Cardiff attack could take advantage.
Jack Moylan then sent an effort over the crossbar, while Patterson comfortably dealt with a Cian Ashford attempt following a period of neat passing from the hosts.
Wrexham Threaten To Pull Away
The visitors remained dangerous and came close to doubling their advantage before half-time.
O’Brien delivered a cross towards Moore, who climbed well and sent a header narrowly over the crossbar. Imray later tested Trott with a mishit effort, although the Cardiff goalkeeper appeared to have the situation under control as the ball was travelling wide.
Cardiff’s concentration problems returned immediately after the interval.
Ollie Rathbone picked out Doyle with a pass into the area, but Trott stood up well at his near post and blocked the effort with his foot. The goalkeeper then made another save, this time from Nathan Broadhead.
Doyle came even closer soon afterwards. His fierce strike beat Trott but struck the post rather than finding the back of the net, leaving Cardiff relieved once again.
The Bluebirds responded by turning to Rubin and Joel Colwill shortly after the hour mark, hoping the brothers could change the direction of the game. Moylan then saw another attempt take a deflection before drifting narrowly wide.
Wrexham appeared to have done enough to hold on, particularly after Dominic Hyam headed against his own crossbar. Yet Cardiff continued to press until the final moments.
Cardiff Deny Wrexham Historic Victory
The late pressure finally produced its reward when Joel Colwill was fouled on the edge of the area.
Rubin stepped forward and produced the decisive moment of the match, sending his free-kick beyond Patterson with virtually the final kick of the game.
The result prevented Wrexham from recording their first victory in Cardiff since 1992 and gave the Bluebirds a point after they had spent much of the evening chasing the game.
Cardiff finished with 65% possession compared with Wrexham’s 35%. The hosts registered 11 attempts, including three on target, while Wrexham managed 18 attempts, with eight finding the target.
Both sides won nine corners. Cardiff committed nine fouls, while Wrexham were penalised 12 times.
