Manchester City stayed firmly in the Premier League race after dispatching Crystal Palace with ease, trimming the gap to Arsenal to just two points with both clubs having played 36 matches.

Pep Guardiola decided to rotate heavily ahead of the upcoming FA Cup final, leaving out several headline names from the starting side. Even without Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Jérémy Doku in the opening lineup, City still controlled proceedings comfortably at the Etihad.

Phil Foden produced one of his sharpest displays in months, orchestrating attacks and reminding everyone why he remains one of the club’s most decisive players when at his best.

Despite the convincing victory, City’s hopes still depend on Arsenal slipping up. The league leaders face already-relegated Burnley on Monday, a fixture many expect Mikel Arteta’s side to navigate successfully.

Early Palace Threat Fades Quickly

Guardiola made six alterations from the side that defeated Brentford 3-0 previously. One notable return came from Josko Gvardiol, back in action after spending months sidelined with a broken leg.

Crystal Palace nearly stunned the hosts early on when Jean-Philippe Mateta found the net, only for the effort to be disallowed because Brennan Johnson had drifted offside in the buildup.

Johnson continued to trouble City’s defense during the opening stages. A dangerous burst down the left created an opportunity for Yéremy Pino, while another Palace set-piece saw Chris Richards rise highest before directing his header over the crossbar.

City initially looked flat and predictable. Possession circulated endlessly without penetration, echoing some of the sluggish performances Guardiola’s side had recently shown against Burnley and Everton.

Foden Sparks the Breakthrough

Everything changed once Foden began dictating the rhythm.

Operating centrally behind the attack, the England international delivered the moment that unlocked Palace’s resistance. Bernardo Silva fed Matheus Nunes, who quickly located Foden with his back to goal. After a brief glance forward, Foden cleverly flicked a backheel into Antoine Semenyo’s path.

The forward made no mistake, firing beyond Dean Henderson to give City the lead.

Guardiola celebrated passionately on the touchline after the opener, though moments later he was furious when his players allowed Tyrick Mitchell too much space on the counterattack.

City soon regained full control and doubled their advantage through Omar Marmoush. Rayan Aït-Nouri floated a dangerous delivery into the box, Foden redirected it intelligently, and the Egyptian striker hammered home from close range.

At 2-0, the contest already appeared beyond Palace.

Palace Rotations Fail to Change Momentum

Oliver Glasner also shuffled his lineup, introducing Yéremy Pino alongside Jefferson Lerma and Will Hughes while leaving several regular starters out.

Even so, Palace struggled to maintain any sustained pressure after City’s second goal. Their attacking threat became increasingly sporadic as Guardiola’s side dictated possession with authority.

Foden nearly collected a third assist before halftime when he delivered an excellent ball for Gvardiol, but Henderson reacted brilliantly to keep out the defender’s header.

The visitors entered the break fortunate not to be further behind.

Rainy Conditions Suit City

Heavy rain continued throughout the second half, creating a slick surface that benefited City’s quick passing combinations.

Gvardiol frequently surged forward from left-back but missed one inviting chance to release Marmoush through on goal. Foden also overhit a lofted pass intended for the Egyptian striker during another promising attack.

Guardiola later introduced Nathan Aké and Doku as City continued to push for another goal. Doku immediately added energy down the flank, linking effectively with teammates after replacing Nunes.

Glasner responded with a triple substitution, bringing on Adam Wharton, Jørgen Strand Larsen and Ismaïla Sarr. The latter almost made an instant impact after racing clear, though Gianluigi Donnarumma gathered comfortably.

Savinho Seals Comfortable Win

Any lingering doubt disappeared six minutes from time when Savinho added City’s third goal.

The Brazilian capped another polished attacking move to complete a dominant evening for Guardiola’s men, who finished with overwhelming control of possession and far more attacking attempts than Palace.

City ended the night with 74 percent possession, 15 total efforts on goal and nine corners, underlining their superiority across the match.

Guardiola’s team can now only continue winning and hope Arsenal stumble before the season concludes. Palace themselves could yet influence the title outcome when they face the league leaders on the final weekend.

Foden acknowledged the drama still possible in the race afterward.

He admitted that unpredictable moments often arrive on the last day of the campaign and insisted City must simply keep handling their own business while waiting to see whether Arsenal drop points.

For Palace manager Glasner, the verdict was straightforward.

The Austrian conceded his side had been second-best throughout and admitted that earning a result against City requires a near-perfect performance something his team failed to produce on this occasion.
