Manchester City head into a three-week pause for international fixtures with maximum points, but Enzo Maresca believes drawing conclusions about the championship would be premature.
Sunday’s dramatic 5-3 success against Sunderland at the Etihad took City’s tally to 15 after five league outings. Arsenal, the defending champions, sit three points behind following their defeat away to Brighton a day earlier.
Asked about occupying first place before the interruption, Maresca welcomed the advantage without treating it as evidence of how the season would unfold. Winning was clearly preferable, he explained, and holding a three-point cushion offered a better position than facing an equivalent deficit. Nevertheless, the campaign remained in its early stages.
For the City manager, the forthcoming break also provides an opportunity to assess the opening matches. He intends to examine what has worked, identify areas requiring improvement and enjoy some breathing space before domestic competition resumes.
Attacking Rewards Come With Defensive Concerns
Although satisfied with the result, Maresca would have preferred a narrow victory without conceding to the eight-goal spectacle his team produced.
Sunderland’s approach had given him reason to anticipate a demanding afternoon. Their aggression when out of possession was something he had highlighted beforehand, and the visitors duly made City work for their fifth league victory.
What pleased Maresca was his side’s ability to overcome those difficulties and finish with the points. Their attacking output offered encouragement, too: five goals did not represent the full extent of the opportunities they generated, and he felt a higher total had been possible.
At the other end, however, there was considerably less satisfaction. City had kept opponents scoreless in four successive matches before allowing Sunderland to register three times. Maresca stressed that the manner of those concessions needed addressing, even on a day when his forwards provided enough goals to compensate.
Semenyo Gives City the Decisive Edge
The first half repeatedly threatened to escape the hosts’ control. Enzo Fernández and Rayan Cherki each put City ahead, only for Brian Brobbey to answer on both occasions and restore parity for Sunderland.
Antoine Semenyo finally established an advantage that lasted until the interval, scoring in the 43rd minute to send City into the dressing room leading 3-2.
His next contribution, after play resumed, created a two-goal cushion. Yet Sunderland again refused to let the contest settle. Brobbey struck for a third time in the 59th minute, reducing the deficit to 4-3 and keeping the outcome uncertain.
Erling Haaland eventually supplied City’s fifth late on to round off the scoring.
For Brobbey, an outstanding individual performance brought an unwelcome distinction. No player had recorded a Premier League hat-trick in defeat since December 2007, when Roque Santa Cruz scored three for Blackburn during their 5-3 reverse against Wigan.
Le Bris Questions Crucial Penalty Decision
A disputed incident preceded Semenyo’s second goal. With Sunderland trailing 3-2, Elliot Anderson appeared to use his hand inside City’s penalty area, but the officials allowed play to continue. The hosts then broke forward in the move that produced their fourth.
Sunderland boss Régis Le Bris struggled to understand why the incident had not been judged handball. While making his disagreement clear, he acknowledged that the decision had to be accepted and found the episode difficult to discuss further.
His frustration did not diminish his pride in Sunderland’s performance. Despite leaving without points, Le Bris felt his players had demonstrated their quality against a side he regarded as among Europe’s strongest.
The afternoon’s lesson, in his assessment, concerned the fine margins at such a demanding level. Against opposition of that calibre, even a limited opening could lead to punishment.
