Arsenal’s emerging talent made another emphatic statement as Max Dowman scored twice and provided an assist in a commanding Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich Town. The 16-year-old delivered a man-of-the-match performance, showing the kind of individual quality that has prompted Mikel Arteta to draw comparisons with Lionel Messi.

Dowman was not the only teenager to impress. Seventeen-year-old Marli Salmon looked equally assured at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, producing an accomplished display during just his second senior appearance.

The result continued Arsenal’s perfect start to the new campaign, with seven victories from seven matches. After finally ending their long wait for a major trophy last season, the Gunners have quickly demonstrated their desire to compete for more silverware, while the emergence of Dowman gives Arteta another exceptional attacking option from the Hale End academy.

Arsenal’s Youngster Makes His Chance Count

The two sides arrived at Portman Road with significantly changed lineups after their Premier League victories over the weekend. In total, the managers made 19 alterations, reflecting the importance both placed on managing their squads.

Ipswich used the occasion to give several players an opportunity following a summer of substantial investment. Many of the footballers who helped secure an immediate return to the Premier League last season, however, struggled to make an impact against Arsenal.

Gary O’Neil acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge afterward, describing Arsenal as an exceptionally demanding opponent. He also admitted that Ipswich paid heavily for their mistakes throughout the match.

For Dowman, the opportunity arrived just seven minutes after kick-off.

Arteta had previously stressed that the teenager would have to earn his playing time like every other member of the squad. Dowman wasted little time showing why he deserved his chance.

After winning possession from Santiago Núñez near the halfway line, Dowman drove forward towards the penalty area. Cédric Kipré, standing at 6ft 3in, appeared to be the final obstacle between the youngster and goal, but a rapid sequence of touches allowed Dowman to evade the Ivory Coast defender.

He then calmly guided his shot into the corner before celebrating with a knee slide reminiscent of Thierry Henry.

The timing of the goal was particularly fitting given that Ipswich supporters had been mocking Arsenal fans over their lack of European Cup success.

Arteta Urges Care Around Teenage Star

Dowman’s ability to produce decisive moments with such apparent ease is precisely what has impressed Arteta.

“He can deliver those actions effortlessly. That’s his biggest quality,” Arteta said when discussing the movement that created the opening goal.

The Arsenal manager also stressed the importance of managing the youngster carefully. At only 16, Dowman is operating in an environment that remains unusual for a player his age, particularly in the English top flight.

Arteta believes every opportunity must come with suitable preparation and circumstances that allow Dowman to develop without being exposed unnecessarily.

The midfielder had not featured for Arsenal’s first team since the final match of the previous campaign, when the club were crowned champions. During the summer, he completed his GCSEs and also spent a week in New York during the World Cup, where he encountered former Manchester United and France midfielder Paul Pogba.

His latest outing suggested he is ready to make another contribution when called upon.

Madueke Adds a Second Blow

Ipswich’s problems quickly multiplied after Dowman’s opener.

Arsenal’s pressing work helped create their second goal, with Dowman initiating the pressure before Bruno Guimarães and Mikel Merino combined to release Noni Madueke. The winger finished emphatically to give Arsenal a two-goal advantage before 15 minutes had elapsed.

The hosts did not simply surrender, however. Zian Flemming came close to reducing the deficit, only for Salmon to produce an important goal-line clearance and preserve Arsenal’s clean sheet.

Salmon subsequently provided another glimpse of his confidence on the ball. Shortly before the interval, he calmly escaped pressure from Flemming before embarking on an impressive run through midfield. His composure earned applause from the Arsenal substitutes and coaching staff.

The defender had only turned 17 the previous month, when he signed his first professional contract. His development had already included appearances in both the Champions League and FA Cup during the previous season.

Dowman Strikes Again After the Break

Any hopes Ipswich had of producing a comeback disappeared almost immediately after half-time.

Only two minutes into the second period, Martín Zubimendi picked out Dowman around the edge of the six-yard area. The teenager made no mistake, delicately guiding his finish into the far corner to complete his second goal of the evening.

Merino soon added another as Arsenal effectively settled the contest. Dowman was again involved in the move, providing the touch that allowed the midfielder to curl his effort against the post and into the net.

Ipswich eventually gave their supporters something to celebrate. Substitute Jack Clarke created the opening for Anis Mehmeti, who pulled one goal back and generated the loudest response of the night from the home crowd.

The hosts added another consolation deep into stoppage time. Former Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom saw his effort take a deflection on its way into the net, but by then the outcome had long been decided.
