When Manchester United’s supporters began chanting Marcus Rashford’s name, it was a significant moment for a player whose connection with the club has endured a difficult period. The academy graduate has experienced the journey every young United supporter dreams about, progressing from a skinny schoolboy into a player capable of making 76,000 people rise from their seats.

Rashford remains one of their own. That history gives him a level of goodwill that few players can replicate, but the affection comes with expectations. United’s supporters are prepared to embrace their returning forward, yet they want to see something in return on the pitch.

His last appearance in a United shirt at Old Trafford had come on 7 December 2024. On that occasion, he entered from the bench during a 3-2 home defeat against Nottingham Forest, attempting to change the course of a game that had already slipped away.

By then, his relationship with Ruben Amorim had become increasingly strained. Amorim was the second United head coach to grow frustrated with Rashford, eventually leading to his departure from the first-team picture.

Since then, the forward has spent time away from Manchester on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona. His return was therefore unexpected. The reunion appears to have been driven partly by circumstance, with limited alternatives available in the market and finding a suitable replacement proving difficult.

Carrick Needs More From His Experienced Forward

Rashford’s introduction at Hull came at half-time, replacing Patrick Dorgu after United had endured a deeply disappointing opening 45 minutes. He was unable to provide the immediate spark the visitors needed, repeatedly finding himself taking routes that led nowhere as he attempted to inject life into a struggling side.

Yet Michael Carrick knows precisely why Rashford could be important to this latest attempt at restoring United to prominence. A player with his experience and ability cannot simply be another member of the squad. He needs to be part of the group leading the rebuild.

That responsibility comes with another requirement. Carrick cannot afford distractions away from football or frustration becoming visible when matches become difficult. United have struggled badly in those situations in recent seasons, and the pressure only increases when they fall behind at home to a newly promoted opponent.

The defeat at Hull, coming only a week after United had lost to another promoted side, underlined how much character is still required from the squad.

Carrick’s approach could prove important here. He is more inclined to support his players and understand the unique pressures attached to representing United. For Rashford, that could provide the environment required to rediscover his best form.

Rashford Shows Signs of a Different Role

There has never been much debate about Rashford’s natural ability. His spell at Barcelona demonstrated that he could operate at a high level outside Manchester, while he also spent the summer representing England at the World Cup.

His preparation for the tournament was another indication that the forward remains serious about improving. Rashford trained privately in Miami and brought former teammates into those sessions, putting additional work into his game away from the spotlight.

At 28, however, the expectation is no longer simply that he contributes as a talented attacker. He should now be one of the senior figures within the squad.

Carrick appears willing to give him that responsibility. Behind Rashford, United have teenage prospects such as Shea Lacey and JJ Gabriel waiting for their opportunities. The older forward has accumulated enough experience to serve as an example for players still beginning their careers.

Against Ipswich, Rashford looked more comfortable on the left. United repeatedly sought to exploit Dara O’Shea in that area, giving Rashford opportunities to attack from different angles.

That versatility remains one of his most useful qualities. He can drive beyond a defender and head towards the byline, or instead move inside and threaten from a central position. He attempted both approaches, with several crosses creating danger, although United lacked the striker needed to convert them.

Fernandes Sets the Standard

Bruno Fernandes understandably dominated the headlines after scoring a hat-trick, but United’s performance also highlighted why the team cannot depend entirely on one outstanding individual.

Fernandes has become an example of the influence a senior player can have when United are functioning properly. Rashford has not always followed that model, but seeing his captain produce such a decisive performance should provide another incentive for the England international.

The target is not simply to rediscover his old reputation. Rashford needs to reach the standard expected of both himself and the club.

He was still some distance from his best against Ipswich, but there were encouraging signs. His body language remained positive, and he continued making runs into dangerous positions even when the likelihood of receiving the ball appeared low.

That willingness matters. A player trying to rebuild his standing cannot expect everything to return immediately.

The Numbers Tell a More Encouraging Story

Rashford ended the match without either a goal or an assist despite United scoring five times, a statistic that may have frustrated him. Even so, rebuilding a reputation cannot happen in a single 80-minute appearance.

There were moments when the outcome could easily have been different. Bryan Mbeumo came close to turning one of Rashford’s deliveries into a goal, sending the ball against the crossbar from only a yard away. On another occasion, Rashford saw a shot saved that might otherwise have found the net.

The contrast with United’s previous outing at Hull was striking. Barely any clear opportunities had been created there, with the team struggling to threaten the opposition goal. Against Ipswich, United attempted 33 shots and managed 11 efforts on target.

The attacking display showed greater urgency and productivity, although it was hardly perfect. Ipswich still created opportunities of their own and could have punished United for their defensive shortcomings.

Rashford played a role in the improvement. His persistence, combined with Mbeumo’s constant movement, forced defenders to work repeatedly. As United gained control, the pair continued to occupy opponents and gradually exhausted both their physical and mental resources.

That kind of contribution does not always appear in the statistics, but it can be crucial to a team trying to sustain pressure.

Carrick Sees Plenty of Room for Improvement

Carrick was pleased with what he saw from Rashford, particularly given the circumstances surrounding his return.

“Really pleased with Marcus, I am sure it was nice for him to be back and start games and be involved in a good performance,” Carrick said. “I thought he did particularly well in not easy circumstances. I thought he did all round good and will only get better.”

The manager’s comments underline the importance of patience. Rashford is returning to a club where expectations are enormous, while also attempting to rebuild a relationship that has been damaged over time.

There is still work to do, but his performance offered enough evidence for Carrick to believe that improvement can follow.

Sesko Could Unlock More From Rashford

Rashford may officially carry the No 9 shirt within the squad, but Carrick is currently choosing Benjamin Sesko as the starting centre-forward.

That could ultimately work in Rashford’s favour.

Once Sesko reaches full fitness, United will have a striker capable of attacking deliveries and operating as a more traditional focal point in the penalty area. Such a presence could create additional opportunities for Rashford and the other attackers around him.

Rashford has already experienced the benefits of playing alongside an elite finisher. During his season with Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona, he became accustomed to having a forward capable of turning quality service into goals.

Having an established No 9 in front of him could therefore give Rashford greater freedom and make his crossing and movement more productive.

A United Story That Is Not Finished

Few people would have predicted that Rashford and Manchester United would find themselves together again after everything that happened. Yet circumstances have brought them back to the same place.

The relationship is not completely repaired, and there is still plenty that needs to be proven. Nevertheless, the first signs suggest that the two sides may be capable of making the arrangement work.

There remains a clear sense of affection because Rashford’s connection with United stretches far beyond his footballing career. His story includes the excitement of scoring on his debut against Midtjylland as well as the much more difficult fallout with Amorim.

The highs and lows are inseparable from his identity at the club. Rashford has spent much of his life at Manchester United, making his journey unlike that of most players.

Now, with Carrick offering him another opportunity, the next chapter has begun. Whether it becomes another successful period or another difficult episode remains uncertain, but Rashford’s Manchester United story is clearly not finished.
