Chelsea’s preparations for crucial upcoming fixtures have been thrown into disarray following the club’s decision to drop vice-captain Enzo Fernández for two games. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed the drastic measure, stating that the Argentinian midfielder had “crossed a line” with recent public remarks concerning his future at Stamford Bridge and his desire to reside in Madrid. This disciplinary action comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Blues, who are navigating a challenging period marked by inconsistent performances and heightened external scrutiny. The decision underscores Rosenior’s commitment to upholding the club’s internal culture and standards, even if it means benching a player acquired for a British record fee.

Club Culture Takes Precedence Over Star Power

The controversy stems from comments made by Enzo Fernández during what manager Liam Rosenior described as the worst ten days of his career. Fernández first hinted at uncertainty regarding his long-term future at Stamford Bridge beyond the current season. He then compounded the issue by suggesting a preference for living in Madrid, a statement widely interpreted as an overture towards Real Madrid, a club with whom he has frequently been linked.

Rosenior did not mince words when explaining the sanction. “For Enzo, it is disappointing to speak in that way,” he said. “What I will say about Enzo is that, in terms of him as a character, as a person, I have no bad words to say about him. However, I believe a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. So we had to make a sanction, and that was a decision we have made. The door is not closed on Enzo. That is very important. It is a sanction. You have to protect that culture. I think in terms of that, the line was crossed in the international break.” As a result, Fernández will train with the first team but will be unavailable for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City.

Agent Hits Back at “Unfair” Punishment

The decision has not been met with universal agreement. Javier Pastore, Fernández’s agent, publicly denounced the punishment as “completely unfair.” Speaking to The Athletic, Pastore argued, “The punishment is completely unfair. Banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team’s most important players.”

Pastore further clarified Fernández’s comments, explaining, “He only mentions Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he would like to live in one day. He said Madrid because of the language, because it is similar to Buenos Aires and because it is logical. It is only natural for an Argentine to say that, and also because of the culture and the weather. But at no point does he say he wants to leave Chelsea or London.” This defence highlights a potential misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the player’s remarks, yet the club’s disciplinary action suggests they viewed the intent differently.

A Broader Challenge of Unity and Focus

Fernández is not the only player to have courted controversy recently. Marc Cucurella also used an interview to criticise the decision to sack Rosenior’s immediate predecessor, Enzo Maresca, and hinted at a possible return to his former club Barcelona. Rosenior confirmed he had addressed the issue directly with the Spanish defender, urging him to communicate any grievances internally. The manager assured that Cucurella remains “fully committed” and “wants to be here,” having made that very clear.

These individual incidents unfold against a backdrop of a difficult period for Chelsea. The team endured four successive defeats before the international break, including a bruising 8-2 aggregate exit from the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain. Rosenior described this stretch as “the most difficult 10 days of my career as a player or a coach.” Despite the public comments from key players, Rosenior insists there is no dressing room rift. “I will make this very, very clear. There is not a rift in the dressing room,” he stated. “There is not a group of players who are not speaking to another group of players. We are together. We go through, and every club goes through, difficult moments in the season.”

Rosenior Defends His Record and Looks Ahead

Rosenior also used the opportunity to defend his managerial record since taking charge in January. “There is a perception at the moment that is not reflecting reality,” he explained. “My record in the Premier League since I joined the club, we are fourth in the league in the form table. There is a noise around the football club that we are in crisis, that I am out of my depth, that I talk nonsense. It does not affect what is inside of here and that is what the players need to know as well.”

Looking to the future, Rosenior hinted that more players, following club captain Reece James, are set to commit their futures to Chelsea by signing new contracts. “You will see what happens in the next couple of weeks in terms of the commitment of the players to this project,” he teased. In terms of team news, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Levi Colwill remain sidelined for the Port Vale encounter, but Estêvão and Jamie Gittens are available after recovering from injuries.

The disciplinary action against Enzo Fernández sends a strong message about the non-negotiable standards Liam Rosenior expects at Chelsea. While the timing is far from ideal, with crucial FA Cup and Premier League fixtures looming, the manager has prioritised club culture. The coming weeks will test the squad’s unity and resolve, especially without a key midfielder. However, Rosenior’s steadfast approach and hints of further player commitments suggest a determined effort to steer the club through its current challenges and build a cohesive, disciplined unit for the future.
