Celtic are preparing to formally install Martin O’Neill as their permanent manager after the veteran coach reached an agreement on a one-year contract extension to continue leading the club in Glasgow.

The 74-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign while serving in an interim capacity, guiding Celtic to a domestic double during the latter of two temporary stints he undertook throughout the season. His success ultimately convinced the club to move toward a longer-term arrangement.

Keane Considered but Supporter Opposition Proved Significant

Before settling on O’Neill, Celtic’s decision-makers explored other options. Among the leading candidates was Robbie Keane, who remained firmly under consideration and recently held discussions with the club’s majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond.

Despite those talks, the prospect of Keane taking charge generated strong resistance from sections of the Celtic fanbase. Much of the criticism centred on his previous managerial work in Israel.

Keane most recently managed Maccabi Tel Aviv before moving to Hungary to take over at Ferencváros. His time there ended when he stepped down from the position at the end of May.

Scottish Cup Success Helped Shape the Decision

Following Celtic’s victory over Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup final, O’Neill took time to reflect on whether he wished to continue in the role. Even so, there was a widespread belief within the club that he remained interested in extending his stay beyond the interim period.

Reports indicate that the agreement could contain an option allowing the partnership to continue for an additional season beyond the initial year.

The development also carries a strong sense of history. More than a quarter of a century has passed since Desmond persuaded O’Neill to leave Leicester and begin his first spell at Celtic. That appointment transformed the club’s fortunes and marked the beginning of one of the most successful managerial eras in modern Celtic history.

A Familiar Figure with a Proven Track Record

During his original tenure, O’Neill oversaw an impressive collection of silverware. Celtic captured three Scottish league championships, lifted the Scottish Cup on three occasions and added two Scottish League Cups to their trophy cabinet.

His side also enjoyed a memorable European run, reaching the 2003 UEFA Cup final. Although Celtic ultimately fell short against José Mourinho’s Porto, the campaign remains one of the club’s most celebrated continental achievements.

From Interim Solution to Long-Term Choice

O’Neill initially returned to the dugout on a temporary basis after Brendan Rodgers departed the club in October. His appointment was intended as a short-term measure while Celtic searched for a permanent successor.

That search led to the arrival of Wilfried Nancy, but the French coach endured a difficult period in charge. His tenure lasted only eight matches before the club once again turned to O’Neill.

The experienced Northern Irishman steadied the team, restored consistency and successfully guided Celtic to another Scottish Premiership title. Those achievements have now placed him on the verge of securing the position permanently, completing an unexpected but remarkable return to the club where he previously enjoyed so much success.
