The football community is in mourning following the untimely death of Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa international, who has passed away at just 25 years old.
Adams was a key part of Bafana Bafana’s squad at the recent World Cup, featuring in all three of the nation’s group-stage fixtures. He was in the starting eleven for the opening defeat to Mexico and the draw against Czechia, before being introduced as a substitute in the victory over South Korea. However, he did not see any action in the heartbreaking last-32 elimination at the hands of Canada.
Gayton McKenzie, the country’s minister of sport, expressed his deep sorrow in an official statement. “It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said, describing the loss of one of South African football’s most promising young stars. He extended condolences to Adams’ family, teammates, and the millions of fans who witnessed his rise from a youth academy hopeful to a fully-fledged Bafana Bafana international.
While the minister did not provide details regarding the cause of death, local authorities have launched an investigation. Police confirmed that the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in the Schotsche Kloof area of Cape Town on Saturday morning. Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk stated that the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being examined.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino also paid tribute, voicing his sadness at the loss of a player who had only recently graced the world’s biggest stage. “My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates,” Infantino said, adding that the Bafana Bafana and Sundowns star would be sorely missed.
Adams’ professional journey began at Stellenbosch FC, where he emerged as the club’s first academy graduate to secure a professional contract. He went on to make 139 appearances for the club and was instrumental in their Carling Knockout triumph in 2023 before securing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
The South African Football Players Union also released a statement, expressing devastation over the passing of a player who had recently carried the nation’s hopes with pride and courage on the international stage. The union offered its deepest sympathies to the Adams family, his clubs, and the entire football fraternity, acknowledging the immense void left by his departure.
