Harry Kane stands just days away from what could become the defining stretch of his football journey. To strengthen his Ballon d’Or credentials, England’s captain must first guide his country past Lionel Messi and Argentina in Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final in Atlanta. If England advance, another huge obstacle either Kylian Mbappé or Lamine Yamal would await in Sunday’s final.

Such moments have never come easily for Kane. His rise has always been shaped by overcoming doubt. As a youngster in Tottenham’s academy, there were serious questions about whether he deserved to remain at the club. Years later, with countless records behind him, another enormous examination now awaits.

Even so, Kane is unlikely to believe that rescuing England against the Democratic Republic of the Congo has significantly enhanced his legacy. Bigger opportunities remain.

Conditions in Atlanta should suit England’s captain far better. The stadium’s roof and air-conditioned environment promise relief after Miami’s exhausting climate.

Kane’s combination of intelligence, physical strength and aerial ability will be tested by Argentina’s experienced central defensive pairing of Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez. Both defenders thrive in physical contests and rarely give forwards an easy afternoon.
