Manchester City have officially appointed Enzo Maresca as their new manager, bringing the Italian back to the Etihad Stadium on a three-year contract. The appointment marks his third spell with the club after previously serving on Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff.
City reached an agreement with Chelsea worth £17 million in compensation to secure the 46-year-old’s release. Separate arrangements were also completed between Maresca and his former club, with the Italian agreeing to a personal settlement after his departure from Stamford Bridge.
For several months, Maresca had been widely viewed as Guardiola’s likely successor after the Spaniard announced his intention to step down. However, negotiations between the two clubs continued for an extended period as Chelsea sought compensation following the manager’s exit.
Chelsea Confirmed Early Discussions
Chelsea stated that Maresca informed the club at the conclusion of last season about the possibility of taking over at Manchester City. According to the London side, his desire to pursue the opportunity became increasingly clear.
The club also indicated that his resignation at the beginning of the year significantly affected their campaign.
Maresca acknowledged the impact his departure had on Chelsea.
“I understand that leaving Chelsea during the season caused disruption and I apologise for the consequences,” he said. “That was never my intention.”
Chelsea released a statement explaining that changing a head coach during a season is never ideal. The club confirmed that both sides reached confidential agreements involving compensation payments between Manchester City and the former Chelsea manager.
Following Guardiola’s Extraordinary Legacy
Guardiola’s decade in charge transformed Manchester City into one of Europe’s dominant teams. During his ten-year reign, the club collected 20 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League triumph that completed the historic treble in 2022-23.
Maresca was part of Guardiola’s coaching staff during that successful campaign, giving him firsthand experience of the standards established at the Etihad.
After leaving City, the Italian impressed during managerial spells at Leicester City and Chelsea. Club officials closely monitored his development and believed his football philosophy closely reflected the principles established under Guardiola.
His tactical approach, combined with his personality and leadership qualities, made him the preferred candidate to guide the club into its next era.
A Familiar Return for the Italian
Speaking after his appointment, Maresca described the opportunity as a special moment in his career.
He said managing Manchester City represented an outstanding challenge at a club he understands well. According to the Italian, City’s structure, planning and long-term vision create ideal conditions for a coach.
Maresca also highlighted the environment within the club as one of its greatest strengths.
“This is my third period at Manchester City,” he said. “I understand the expectations and the standards here. The people inside the club make it a special place, and I appreciate the confidence they have shown in me.
“I am excited to begin working with the players. We want to win, play attractive football and embrace the responsibility that comes with representing Manchester City.”
From Leicester Success to Chelsea Departure
Maresca became Leicester City manager in June 2023 and immediately guided the club back to the Premier League at the first attempt. His achievements earned him a move to Chelsea.
At Stamford Bridge, he led the club to the Conference League and the inaugural Club World Cup, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
Despite those achievements, tensions reportedly developed between Maresca and Chelsea’s hierarchy. The relationship eventually deteriorated, resulting in his departure on 1 January.
Reports at the time suggested that discussions regarding Guardiola’s successor had already taken place, with Maresca informing Chelsea that he had spoken with individuals connected to Manchester City.
Squad Remains Competitive Despite Departures
Maresca inherits a City side that has endured two consecutive seasons without winning the Premier League title.
The squad has also lost important figures, with Bernardo Silva and John Stones leaving the club last season. Even so, the overall condition of the team remains strong.
Manchester City are also expected to complete the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, further strengthening the squad before the new campaign begins.
Club Leadership Back New Manager
Chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak expressed confidence that Maresca possesses the qualities needed to lead the club forward.
He praised the Italian’s ambition, intelligence and determination, describing them as characteristics that align perfectly with the club’s vision.
According to Al-Mubarak, Maresca inherits a football structure that suits his tactical philosophy and gives him the foundation required to continue building on City’s previous successes.
Competitive Debut Approaching
Maresca’s first appearance on the Manchester City bench will come on 1 August when the club faces Internazionale during a pre-season tour in South Korea.
His opening competitive fixture will follow two weeks later when City meet Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley on 16 August.
The Premier League campaign is then scheduled to begin the following weekend with a home match against Bournemouth, marking the official start of a new era at the Etihad Stadium.
