Barcelona are on the verge of completing the signing of Anthony Gordon after striking a £69.3 million agreement with Newcastle United late on Wednesday. The England international is expected to travel to Spain for medical tests in Barcelona on Thursday as the deal moves toward completion.
If the final stages progress without complications, Gordon will secure a major salary increase at Camp Nou, with his new contract understood to be worth close to £300,000 per week.
Gordon Chose Barcelona Over Bayern
Although Bayern Munich had pushed strongly to land the winger and even submitted a late offer on Wednesday, Gordon made it clear that his preference was a switch to FC Barcelona. The chance to begin a new chapter in Catalonia ultimately proved decisive.
The 25-year-old had also attracted serious interest from Liverpool FC, but negotiations accelerated quickly once personal terms with Barcelona were settled. After that breakthrough, discussions between the two clubs focused primarily on the payment structure of the transfer fee before an agreement was finally reached.
Everyone involved was eager to conclude the operation before Monday, when Gordon is expected to join Thomas Tuchel’s England squad in Florida ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Even though the official transfer window does not open until 15 June, both clubs intend to complete the remaining paperwork over the weekend before formally finalising the move next month.
Flick Adds Versatility to Barcelona Attack
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is believed to value Gordon’s tactical flexibility. While the former Everton attacker is most dangerous cutting in from the left wing, he is capable of operating across the forward line.
His European performances this season particularly impressed Barcelona’s recruitment staff. Gordon scored 10 goals in the Champions League campaign, leaving him joint-third among the tournament’s top scorers. Only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé produced more goals in the competition.
Domestically, however, his season was more uneven. Gordon finished as Newcastle’s leading scorer across all competitions with 17 goals, but many of his strongest displays arrived in Europe rather than the Premier League. During stretches of a disappointing league campaign, he was frequently used through the middle and struggled to consistently influence matches.
Competition for places at Camp Nou will remain intense. Gordon is expected to battle with Lamine Yamal and Raphinha for wide attacking roles next season.
Barcelona are also still considering whether to pursue a permanent transfer for Marcus Rashford following his loan spell from Manchester United FC. Rashford’s wages are believed to be significantly higher than the terms Gordon accepted, although the England forward could reportedly be signed permanently for around £26 million.
Newcastle Begin Squad Rebuild
At Newcastle, the sale represents a major step in reshaping the squad after a deeply disappointing campaign that ended with a 12th-place finish in the Premier League.
Chief executive David Hopkinson has repeatedly insisted the club would only sanction departures under favourable conditions, but Newcastle also recognised the need to generate funds in order to strengthen Eddie Howe’s squad this summer.
The club hierarchy were also determined to avoid another drawn-out transfer saga similar to last year’s difficult negotiations involving Alexander Isak. That situation became increasingly tense before the striker eventually joined Liverpool on deadline day last summer.
Interestingly, Liverpool had come close to signing Gordon in 2024. The winger later admitted he became unsettled after the proposed transfer failed to materialise.
Exit Became Increasingly Likely
Over recent weeks, it had become increasingly apparent that a summer departure suited both Newcastle and the player himself.
Despite being contracted on Tyneside until 2030, Gordon played no part in Newcastle’s final six matches of the season. Initially sidelined because of what the club described as a minor hip issue, he then remained unused from the bench during the final four fixtures of the campaign.
Those developments only intensified speculation surrounding his future, with Barcelona now poised to secure one of the summer’s most significant transfers before the market officially opens.
